Brandon Jacobs not willing to sell his soul to remain on NY Giants roster

Brandon Jacobs not willing to sell his soul to remain on NY Giants roster
Brandon Jacobs is willing to compromise to stay with the Super Bowl champions. He says he’s just “not willing to sell my soul” to do it.

The price of his return may not be that high, but it will still be significant if the big running back hopes to extend his Giants career beyond the next two weeks. Jacobs, in an interview Wednesday morning with NewsChannel 4 during a surprise appearance at James Madison High School in Brooklyn, again said there was room for the two sides to work out a new contract.
He made it clear, though, that his willingness to cut his salary will only go so far.
“I want to stay in New York a whole lot, man, because this is where I started,” Jacobs said. “But I’m not willing to sell my soul, you know? It’s a great organization and I want to be a part of it, but if not, if they’re not feeling the same way, then so be it.”
Jacobs confirmed that the possibility of a pay cut “has been discussed” but again added that “it has to make a whole lot of sense.” For it to make sense to the Giants, as the Daily News reported Monday, Jacobs may need to reduce his $4.4 million salary for 2012 by more than half. Otherwise he’ll probably be cut before free agency opens on March 13 — or at least before his $500,000 roster bonus is due on March 17.
Jacobs said he has “no idea” if the sides will be able to strike a deal by then.
“I don’t know what they’re thinking,” Jacobs said. “I want to be here. If not, there’s 31 other teams out there. If they want it to work out, it’s going to work out. If they don’t want it to work out, it’s not going to work out. That’s all I can say.”
One way it could work out, according to an NFL source, is if the Giants offer Jacobs another year or two on his contract — possibly with some guaranteed money — in exchange for a reduced salary in 2012. That could be a tough sell, though, since Jacobs will turn 30 this summer and is coming off a season in which he rushed for only 571 yards on 152 carries (3.8 yards per carry).
Jacobs said he feels fresh after his injury-free season and sees three more NFL campaigns in his future.
“I feel like I’m 25 years old,” he said. “I feel great right now. I’ve still got a lot of gas in my tank and I’m ready to go.”
